Santiago primarily focuses his practice on a full range of Intellectual Property matters which allows him to identify and advise clients on potential risks of doing business in Ecuador while protecting their intellectual property portfolios including the search and clearance of new marks, prosecuting applications before the Ecuadorian Patent and Trademark Office and managing international trademark campaigns. He also routinely handles the maintenance of trademark registrations.
He has also substantial experience in all phases of administrative and civil litigation proceedings regarding Intellectual Property matters, which has permitted him to represent clients in numerous trademark oppositions, cancellations, enforcement of rights and anti-counterfeiting actions before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Committee.
As part of his practice, he advises international and domestic companies on corporate and business law matters where he assists clients in the analysis, negotiation and preparation of contracts for a wide range of business activities in Ecuador. He also handles all steps and formalities required for immigration cases and obtainment of Ecuadorian visas for immigrant and non immigrant individuals.
He participated in numerous anti-counterfeiting actions for name brand clothing companies, which lead to injunctions whereby counterfeit products where seized from the Ecuadorian market and destroyed.
He pursued enforcement and anti-counterfeiting actions for one of the largest and well-known local media and entertainment corporation, which lead to successfully negotiate a settlement with the infringers.
He participated in the procedure of recognition of protection of an appellation of origin in Ecuador, which has also been the first recognition of such appellation in South America.
